5 Complete Sentence Writing Tips to Make BIG Progress

Today, let’s dive into the magical world of sentence-making with our little elementary champs. Teaching our kiddos the skill of complete sentence writing might sound like a tough nut to crack, but trust me, it’s as fun as munching on a bag of hot Cheetos!

Complete Sentence Writing – Unlocking the Magic of Subject and Predicate:

Let’s start with the basics! Remember those days when we first learned about the subject and predicate? Well, it’s time for our little Einsteins to unravel the mystery behind these sentence superheroes. A sentence is like a mini-story, and every story needs its heroes, right? The subject is the star, and the predicate is the action that keeps the story moving. Together, they create the magic of complete sentences. Simple, right?

Example:

  • Subject: The cat
  • Predicate: sat on the mat.

Three-Part Sentence Writing – Adding the Zing of ‘Who/What + Action + When’:

Now, let’s sprinkle a little extra flavor to our sentences. Who or what did what, and when did they do it? That’s the secret sauce to creating those engaging three-part sentences. It’s like giving our sentences a little time stamp, making them alive and kicking. Our young writers will be pros at making the reader feel like they’re right there in the action!

Example:

  • Who or what: The little girl
  • Action: played with her toys
  • When: yesterday afternoon.
  • Final sentence: The little girl played with her toys yesterday afternoon.

Compound Sentence Writing – The Marvelous Blend of Two Combined Sentences:

Just like our favorite smoothie blends, compound sentences are all about mixing things up! It’s time for our students to understand the magic of combining two sentences to create a super-sentence. It’s like putting together two puzzle pieces to make a bigger, more exciting picture. Let’s teach our kids to play with words and watch how their sentences go from drab to fab in no time!

Example:

  • Sentence 1: I love to read.
  • Sentence 2: I also enjoy playing outside.
  • Compound Sentence: I love to read, and I also enjoy playing outside.

Descriptive Sentence Writing – Spicing It Up with Adjectives and Adverbs:

Who doesn’t love a little sprinkle of fairy dust? Well, that’s what descriptive sentences are all about! Let’s encourage our little ones to add some adjectives and adverbs to their sentences. It’s like putting on fancy clothes for their words. The more descriptive, the better! Our students will soon be painting vibrant pictures with their words, and their sentences will dance off the page!

Example:

  • The fluffy dog barked loudly.

Practice Weekly Sentence Writing Skills – All Skills, All Week Long:

Last but not least, practice makes perfect, right? Let’s make it a weekly ritual to hone those fantastic sentence-writing skills. You can get a sample week to try out here. Whether it’s in the classroom or at home, encouraging our little champions to write a sentence each day can work wonders. It’s like watering a tiny plant every day and watching it grow into a beautiful, blooming flower!
