Back to School writing activities will be a breeze with my 3 Must-Have “Get to Know You” projects. If you want to build a classroom community and provide back to school writing opportunities, you’re in the right spot. Be sure to kick start the beginning of school with these three engaging Back to School Writing Activities.

Although the first few weeks of back to school covers procedures and routines, it should also be a time for students to connect. Each of the following back to school writing activities is skill-based, standards-aligned, and engaging.  Most importantly, the students will get to know one another through the three writing activities.

1. The All About Me Flip Book Activity

The back to school season is also a time to enjoy watermelon. With the All About Me Flipbook Activity, students write and share facts about themselves.

The “One In A Million” FlipBook features a Get-to-know you writing activity.
  • Right from the beginning, students read the ever so important message and title, “You Are One In A Million!”
  • On the first page of the flipbook, students share some necessary information about themselves.
  • Whereas in the next two sections, the students have the opportunity to discuss theirs inside and outside personal traits. These two sections model the writing expectations using the watermelon as an example or comparison.
  • My favorite section is 3 Fun Facts. Students think and write about the unique little black seeds of watermelon and discuss their details, making them unique.
  • Most likely, the most valuable section is the last page of the flipbook, the My Goals page. As you start a new school year, we often discuss students’ goals for the upcoming academic year. Here students have a chance to set a few personal goals and record them for accountability. I suggest for students to create an educational and a social goal at this point.

2. Back to School Flip Book Activity

The next back to school writing activity provides a wealth of sharing opportunities. We all know how much students love to talk about their summer break. So, let’s give them a chance to share all those details about their summer. The “My Summer Vibes” Flipbook provides a ton of sharing opportunities.

The “My Summer Vibes” FlipBook Activity allows students to share all the details of their summer.

Students share and write about:

  • Books read
  • Hobbies/Projects
  • Places Traveled
  • Time Spent with Friends
  • Family Experiences Together

3. Studying Character Traits for a Back to School Writing Activity

AKA Which Shoe Fits Your Personality?

The Character Traits Activity provides a fun and engaging writing experience for all levels of learners.

Hands down, the Character Traits Writing activity is my favorite of all the back to school activities.

  • I love the standards-based writing activity because it allows students to get-to-know one another better.
  • The students enjoy the writing activity because it becomes a guessing game to identify whose shoes belong to them. What class doesn’t love a good guessing game?
