Do you need spelling activities that are no-fail and student-approved? Check out how I use engaging, hands-on spelling activities and games in my classroom.
Hallelujah! Here are the spelling activities that your students want to play repeatedly.
Today I’m going to share with you my top student-approved spelling activities.
Why?
The more students interact and use the spelling patterns, the more they benefit. Spelling activities can range from paper-pencil activities to whole-body movement activities. Teachers may use these games and activities as an entire class or as centers.
The spelling activities are for any grade level. Yes, any grade level! Also, note that I will be discussing classroom use; you may also apply the games at home! Let’s get those little kiddos interacting with my student-approved spelling activities!
A suitable Word Sort is essential to any classroom spelling resource of activities. Here, the teacher can introduce the spelling pattern and provide explicit instruction. Students can then identify the spelling pattern in words and group like patterns together.
According to the spelling pattern being taught, the spelling activities vary from week to week. The word sorts are a sure-fire winner each week.
Another beneficial group of spelling activities for any elementary classroom is the “Read, Cover, Write” operations. Students use the power of “visualizing” to “see” the word internally. Here’s how it works:
I have created a one-page simple use and EDITABLE resource, which you may use with any list. Since this resource is EDITABLE, you may reuse it each week! Just type in your new spelling list, and each word will auto-fill into the worksheet. Pretty awesome!
The game of “Sparkle!” is hands down my student’s favorite activity! I’m not sure who the brilliant person came up with the idea, but here are the directions and a video showing a third-grade class playing “Sparkle!” with their spelling words.
Steps for “Sparkle!” Spelling Activity
I’ve created a resource full of hands-on activities that students love to play. I have found that a center rotation of the various games is ideal for my classroom. Students use the spelling activities for a designated time, then rotate to another game. If you’re not into centers, simple runoff multiples of the same game and the entire class can be working on one spelling activity.
The best part of this resource is that it is EDITABLE and can be used with any spelling list! Each week, type in new spelling words for a new set of games and activities. That’s fantastic!
The first spelling activity is a take-off of the traditional game of Cornhole, but on a smaller scale. Students toss little erasers into paper trays from a distance. On the opposite end, the player announces the word the eraser landed on; the tosser needs to spell the word correctly to receive a point.
The game includes small erasers, tossing, and full-body movement! All of which my students crave! Read more about student engagement here.
Another popular game is “Monster Mania” spelling activities, much like the hangman’s traditional game. Instead of hanging, students create a monster in this more appropriate version.
The Jumping Frogs Spelling Activity uses two mats laid out on the floor. Players each have a plastic jumping frog purchased from a discount store, or students may follow the video to create their frog.
You will also find the “Candy Crushers” spelling game is a spin-off of the favorite Phone App. Students gain points with each spelling word spelled aloud to the opponent. Each candy type varies in point value. Candies collected in a row are worth double, triple, or even quadruple their face value.
To complete the set, the spelling Baseball activity is perfect for playing in small groups, center rotations, half the class against the other, or my favorite, the teacher against the class.
